The Office Goes South African! ‘Die Kantoor’ Premiere Date Announced

Get ready for a unique twist on a beloved classic! ‘Die Kantoor’ is here to bring a fresh, South African flavor to ‘The Office’.

The highly anticipated Afrikaans adaptation has finally set its premiere date, and we can’t wait to see how this iconic series will be reimagined for a new audience.

But here’s where it gets interesting… Instead of the usual paper company setting, ‘Die Kantoor’ takes us to the world of Deluxe Processed Meats, a polony manufacturer. Yes, you heard that right! This South African version promises to showcase the country’s distinct culture and humor while keeping the awkward office dynamics that made the original so beloved.

And this is the part most people miss… South Africa is not just about biltong and braais. It’s a nation with a unique identity, and ‘Die Kantoor’ aims to reflect that.

‘It’s a massive honor to be able to make the show,’ says Bennie Fourie, the talented writer and director behind this adaptation. Fourie, a SAFTA and Silwerskerm winner, emphasizes that this isn’t just a direct translation but a reimagining tailored for South African audiences.

‘South Africa is not the U.K. or the U.S., and we really wanted to reflect that,’ Fourie explains.

The choice of a polony manufacturer as the workplace setting is a clever move. It not only represents local culture but also maintains the signature awkwardness of the format.

‘South Africa is a proud meat-consuming nation,’ Fourie elaborates. ‘But polony? It’s just so flippen pink. It’s not something you’d proudly declare your passion for at a braai, especially after that Listeriosis outbreak.’

Get ready to meet Flip, the office manager played by Albert Pretorius, winner of the 2025 Fleur du Cap award. Flip, a recent addition to management, is excited to welcome the documentary crew, feeling like his rise to greatness needs to be documented.

The talented ensemble cast includes SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout, Lida Botha, Carl Beukes, and many more.

‘Our very first Showmax Original was a mockumentary, ‘Tali’s Wedding Diary,’ so reimagining the most iconic mockumentary of them all has been a full circle moment for us,’ says Tracy-Ann van Rooyen, executive head of content at Showmax.

With its unique setting and talented team, ‘Die Kantoor’ is set to make its mark. But will it live up to the legacy of the original? That’s for you to decide!

And here’s the controversial part… Do you think a polony manufacturer is an appropriate setting for this adaptation? Or is it a brilliant choice that captures the essence of South African culture?

Let’s discuss in the comments! We want to hear your thoughts on this exciting adaptation and whether it’s a hit or a miss.
